Mouth (Aramaic); the organ of speech or the opening of something, used in Daniel of kings, beasts, and a pit
The Aramaic equivalent of Hebrew peh ('mouth'), appearing six times in Daniel. It refers to the physical mouth of a king issuing a decree (Dan 4:31), the mouth of lions in the den (Dan 6:22), the mouth of a visionary beast devouring (Dan 7:5), and the mouth of the little horn speaking arrogantly (Dan 7:8, 20), as well as the opening of a pit sealed with a stone (Dan 6:17). The word carries both literal and figurative weight — speech, consumption, and containment all flow from this single term.
Senses
1. mouth (Aramaic) — The physical mouth or opening, used in Aramaic portions of Daniel for the mouth of a king (Dan 4:31), lions (Dan 6:22), apocalyptic beasts (Dan 7:5, 8, 20), and the sealed opening of the lions' den (Dan 6:17). Spanish boca and German Mund both render it straightforwardly, while French and German sometimes leave the Hebrew/Aramaic form untranslated in brackets, reflecting the specialized Aramaic register of the term. The semantic range is unified: the bodily organ or analogous opening through which speech, eating, or passage occurs. 6×
