fugitives, escapees; those who have survived destruction or exile
The plural of an adjective-noun from the root p-l-t (escape), designating those who have fled or survived catastrophe. In Numbers 21:29 it describes Moab's sons given as fugitives to Chemosh. The prophetic texts use it for survivors of Babylon's fall who carry news back to Zion (Jer 50:28; 51:50) and for the remnant of Judah who fled to Egypt (Jer 44:14). Isaiah 66:19 envisions these escapees as emissaries sent to distant nations.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Fugitives or escapees — those who survive a military or divine catastrophe. Spanish renders both 'fugitivos' and 'sobrevivientes,' capturing the dual nuance of flight and survival. Applied to Moabite captives (Num 21:29), Judean refugees in Egypt from whom scarcely any will return (Jer 44:14), survivors of Babylon's destruction bearing witness to Zion (Jer 50:28; 51:50), and eschatological messengers to the nations (Isa 66:19). 5×
