N-ms  |  8× in 1 sense
A bird of prey or raptor; used collectively for carrion birds and individually as a metaphor for a swift, fierce invader.
A masculine noun denoting a bird of prey, derived from a root suggesting a screaming cry. It appears both as a collective term for raptors descending on carcasses -- as in the covenant scene where Abram drives away the birds of prey from his sacrifice (Gen 15:11) -- and as a singular figure representing a powerful invader summoned by God (Isa 46:11, 'a ravenous bird from the east'). Jeremiah 12:9 uses it in a striking double image of Israel as both prey bird and prey. The word also evokes mountain raptors feasting after eschatological slaughter (Isa 18:6, Ezek 39:4). Job 28:7 notes that even the keen-eyed raptor cannot find the path to wisdom.

Senses
1. bird of prey, raptor A bird of prey or raptor, used both collectively for scavenging raptors and individually for a single predatory bird. In Genesis 15:11, birds of prey descend on Abram's covenant sacrifice, an ominous intrusion he must drive away. Isaiah 46:11 famously applies the term to Cyrus as God's instrument: 'a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel.' Ezekiel 39:4 and Isaiah 18:6 depict raptors feasting on the slain in judgment scenes. Job 28:7 notes the bird of prey's legendary sharp sight yet its inability to perceive wisdom's hidden path. Spanish 'ave de rapina' and English 'bird of prey' both capture the predatory specificity.
