Cake, bread-cake; a round flat bread baked on coals or hot stones, used in everyday and ritual meals.
A feminine noun denoting a round, flat cake or bread-disc, typically baked directly on hot stones or coals. It appears in memorable narratives of provision and hospitality: Abraham's urgency in preparing 'ugot from fine flour for his angelic visitors (Gen 18:6), the unleavened cakes baked in haste at the Exodus (Exod 12:39), the manna ground and made into cakes (Num 11:8), and Elijah's miraculous coal-baked cake in the wilderness (1 Kgs 19:6). Hosea 7:8 uses it as a vivid metaphor: Ephraim is 'a cake not turned' -- burnt on one side, raw on the other.
Senses
1. cake, bread-cake (flat baked item) — A round, flat bread-cake baked on hot stones or coals, made from various grains and used in both ordinary hospitality and sacred contexts. In Gen 18:6 Abraham instructs Sarah to make 'ugot from fine flour (solet) for the three visitors -- the Spanish 'torta' and French 'cake' both convey its flat, round shape. Exod 12:39 describes the unleavened 'ugot baked from the dough carried out of Egypt. Num 11:8 records the Israelites grinding manna and making it into cakes. In 1 Kgs 17:13 the widow of Zarephath makes a small cake for Elijah, and 1 Kgs 19:6 describes the angel's provision of a 'cake of hot stones' (ugat retsaphim). Hosea 7:8 memorably compares Ephraim to 'a cake not turned' -- half-baked and therefore ruined. 7×
