The Babylonian court name assigned to Azariah, one of the four Judean youths deported to Nebuchadnezzar's palace (Dan 1:7; 2:17). The name likely means 'servant of Nebo' (the Babylonian deity of wisdom), though its exact etymology is debated since the expected form would be Abed-Nebo. Along with Shadrach and Meshach, Abed-nego is appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon (Dan 2:49) and then famously refuses to worship the golden image, surviving the fiery furnace by divine deliverance (Dan 3:12-30). The Aramaic spelling 'Abed Nego' appears consistently across all fourteen occurrences in Daniel 2-3.
