Ebed-Melech — 'servant of the king,' an Ethiopian court official who rescued Jeremiah from the cistern
The name עֶבֶד מֶלֶךְ (Ebed-Melech) means 'servant of the king' and belongs to a Cushite (Ethiopian) official in the court of King Zedekiah. When Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy cistern to die, Ebed-Melech boldly petitioned the king for permission to rescue him, then carefully lowered worn rags and ropes so the prophet's skin would not be torn (Jer 38:7-13). In gratitude, God sent a personal oracle through Jeremiah promising Ebed-Melech deliverance when Jerusalem fell (Jer 39:15-18). His story stands as one of Scripture's most striking portraits of moral courage from an unexpected quarter — a foreigner who feared God more than the princes of Judah.
Senses
1. Ebed-Melech (personal name) — A Cushite (Ethiopian) court official serving King Zedekiah of Judah, whose name means 'servant of the king.' He intervened to save Jeremiah from death in a muddy cistern by petitioning the king and personally hauling the prophet out with rags and ropes (Jer 38:7-13). God rewarded his courage with an individual oracle of deliverance during Jerusalem's fall (Jer 39:15-18). Spanish 'Ebed-melec' and English 'Ebed-Melech' both transliterate the compound name. He appears only in Jeremiah 38-39 but is among the most memorable minor figures in prophetic literature. 11×
