Ebed-Melech — 'servant of the king,' an Ethiopian court official who rescued Jeremiah from the cistern
The name עֶבֶד מֶלֶךְ (Ebed-Melech) means 'servant of the king' and belongs to a Cushite (Ethiopian) official in the court of King Zedekiah. When Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy cistern to die, Ebed-Melech boldly petitioned the king for permission to rescue him, then carefully lowered worn rags and ropes so the prophet's skin would not be torn (Jer 38:7-13).
