Servant, slave (Aramaic); used of royal courtiers and servants of God in Daniel and Ezra.
The Aramaic cognate of Hebrew eved ('servant, slave'), appearing in the court scenes of Daniel and the administrative correspondence of Ezra. It designates both human servants of the king -- 'we are your servants' (Ezra 4:11; Dan 2:4, 7) -- and servants of God, as when Daniel is called 'servant of the living God' (Dan 6:21) and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are recognized as God's servants (Dan 3:26, 28). The translations uniformly render it with servant terminology: Spanish siervo/siervos, German Knecht, reflecting the word's consistent meaning across both royal and theological registers.
Senses
1. servant, slave — An Aramaic noun for servant or slave, used in both royal and theological contexts. In diplomatic address, officials identify themselves as the king's servants (Ezra 4:11, 'your servants'; Dan 2:4, 7). In confessional and narrative contexts, it designates faithful servants of God: Daniel is 'servant of the living God' (Dan 6:21), and the three companions are acknowledged as God's servants who trusted him (Dan 3:26, 28). Ezra 5:11 reports the elders' self-identification as 'servants of the God of heaven and earth.' Spanish siervo and German Knecht both capture the deferential relationship of subordination, whether to an earthly monarch or to God. 8×
