cleft, crevice (of rock); branch, bough (of a tree)
2. branch, bough (of a tree) A branch or bough of a tree, used in prophetic metaphor. In Isa 17:6 the gleaning metaphor describes olives remaining 'on its boughs' (בִּסְעִפֶיהָ), referring to the uppermost branches of a harvested tree; in Isa 27:10 the desolate city is depicted with a calf grazing and consuming 'its branches' (סְעִפֶיהָ). Arabic uses أَغْصَان / غُصُون (branches); Korean uses 가지들 (branches); Hindi uses डालियां (branches); Spanish uses ramas (branches). Cross-linguistically, every language uses a distinct botanical term (branches) rather than the geological term (cleft/crack) used for the first sense, confirming genuine polysemy.

1. cleft, crevice (of rock) A fissure, cleft, or crevice in a rocky crag, used as a hiding place or place of concealment. In Judg 15:8,11 Samson dwells in the 'cleft of the rock of Etam' (סְעִיף סֶלַע עֵיטָם); in Isa 2:21 people flee 'into crevices of the rocks' (וּבִסְעִפֵי הַסְּלָעִים) to escape God's judgment; in Isa 57:5 idolaters sacrifice children 'in the clefts of the crags' (סְעִפֵי הַסְּלָעִים). Arabic consistently uses شَقّ / شُعَب (cleft/fissure); Korean uses 틈/갈라진 곳 (crack/split place); Hindi uses दरार (crack/fissure); Spanish uses hendidura/grieta (crack/crevice). The geological sense is clear from the rock-association collocations.
