1. sweet, sweetness — Sweet to the taste or pleasant, used both as an adjective and substantively for sweetness itself. Describes honey and honeycomb (Judg 14:14, 18; Ps 19:10), pleasant food (Prov 24:13; 27:7), the sweetness of sleep for the laborer (Eccl 5:12), the sweetness of light and life (Eccl 11:7), and metaphorically the moral inversion of calling sweet bitter (Isa 5:20). Also used for the sweetness of God's words (Ezek 3:3) and the beloved's mouth (Song 2:3). In comparative form 'sweeter than' expresses superlative delight. The nominal use ('sweetness') in Ezek 3:3 and the adjectival use throughout are the same lexeme in different syntactic roles. 12×
