H4916a H4916a
A sending forth, undertaking, or enterprise -- especially what one puts one's hand to in work or livelihood.
A masculine construct noun from the root shalach ('to send'), denoting the act of sending forth one's hand -- hence an undertaking, enterprise, or endeavor. It appears almost exclusively in Deuteronomy in the formulaic blessing phrase 'in every undertaking of your hand' (Deut 12:7, 18; 15:10; 23:20; 28:8, 20), where God promises to bless all that one puts one's hand to do. The single occurrence in Isaiah 7:25 shifts to a concrete sense: a place for 'letting loose' of cattle. Spanish 'emprendimiento/obra' and English 'undertaking' consistently highlight purposeful, productive activity.
Senses
1. sending, undertaking, enterprise — The act of sending forth or putting one's hand to something, hence an undertaking, enterprise, or endeavor. English 'undertaking-of' and Spanish 'emprendimiento-de/obra-de' converge on purposeful activity or work. Six of seven occurrences appear in Deuteronomy's blessing formulae: God will bless 'every sending-forth of your hand' (Deut 12:7, 12:18, 15:10, 23:20, 28:8), with 28:20 using the same phrase in a curse context. The expression captures the totality of one's productive labor and livelihood. In Isaiah 7:25 the noun takes a more concrete sense: a place for the 'letting loose' of oxen, parallel to mirmas ('trampling-place') for sheep. 7×
