Deep, depth, abyss — the unfathomable ocean depths, used of the Red Sea, chaotic waters, and God's power to submerge
The noun מְצוּלָה (metsulah) denotes a watery depth or abyss. In the Song of the Sea, Pharaoh's forces sink 'into the depths like a stone' (Exod 15:5; Neh 9:11). The Psalms deploy it for overwhelming distress -- the suppliant cries from 'deep waters' (Ps 69:2, 15; 88:6), and sailors witness wonders in the deep (Ps 107:24). Jonah prays from the metsulah that engulfed him (Jon 2:3). God promises to cast Israel's sins into the depths of the sea (Mic 7:19). Leviathan makes the deep churn like a pot (Job 41:31). Spanish 'profundidades' and French 'abîme' capture the register.
Senses
1. depth, deep place — The literal ocean depths or deep waters, especially the Red Sea into which God cast Pharaoh's army (Exod 15:5; Neh 9:11). Leviathan makes the deep boil like a cauldron (Job 41:31), and sailors witness God's wonders in the deep (Ps 107:24). Jonah sinks into the metsulah at the heart of the seas (Jon 2:3). The word always conveys vastness, power, and the overwhelming force of water. Spanish 'profundidades' and French 'profondeurs' translate directly. 11×
