Military garrison or outpost; standing-place or appointed station
From the root natsav ('to stand, take one's stand'), this masculine noun denotes either a military garrison or a place where one stands in an assigned position. Its military sense dominates the narrative of Saul and Jonathan's confrontation with the Philistines, where the word recurs seven times for the Philistine garrison at the pass of Michmash (1 Sam 13-14). In its non-military sense, Joshua 4 uses it for the exact spot in the Jordan riverbed where the priests' feet stood bearing the ark. Isaiah 22:19 applies it metaphorically to Shebna's office or station from which God will thrust him down.

Senses
1. garrison, military outpost A military garrison, outpost, or forward position of soldiers stationed in strategic territory. Used predominantly for Philistine garrisons threatening Israel during the reign of Saul. Jonathan and his armor-bearer famously approached the Philistine matstsav at Michmash (1 Sam 14:1, 4, 6), and 2 Samuel 23:14 references a Philistine garrison in Bethlehem. Spanish 'destacamento' and 'guarnicion,' along with French 'garnison,' consistently render this fortified military station.

2. standing-place, appointed position A standing-place or fixed appointed position, either in a literal physical sense or as a figurative station of authority. In Joshua 4:3 and 4:9, the word marks the precise spot where the priests' feet stood firm in the Jordan -- a memorial location of theophanic significance. In Isaiah 22:19, it signifies the office or appointed station from which the steward Shebna will be deposed, paralleled by ma'amad ('standing'). The shift from concrete foothold to abstract office shows the word's semantic flexibility rooted in the idea of a fixed, established place.
