Journey, stage of march — a breaking of camp and traveling to the next stopping-place; Israel's wilderness stages
The noun מַסָּע (massa) derives from the verb נסע ('pull up stakes, set out') and refers to the act of breaking camp and journeying onward, or more specifically to a single stage of a longer march. It occurs almost entirely in the Pentateuch's wilderness narratives, where it traces Israel's movement from one encampment to the next. Genesis 13:3 uses it of Abram's staged return from Egypt to Bethel. Numbers 10:12 marks the departure from Sinai 'by their stages,' and Numbers 33:1-2 catalogs all forty-two 'stages' of Israel's wilderness journey as a sacred itinerary. Spanish 'jornadas/partidas' and French 'marches/étapes' both convey the sense of measured travel segments.
Senses
1. journey, stage of march — A breaking of camp, setting out on a journey, or a single stage in a longer march — used almost exclusively for Israel's wilderness itinerary. Abram's staged return from Egypt (Gen 13:3), Israel's departure from Sinai (Num 10:12, 28), and the comprehensive catalog of forty-two wilderness stations (Num 33:1-2) all employ this term. Exodus 17:1 and 40:36, 38 link the stages to the movement of the cloud of glory over the tabernacle. The word encapsulates the theological motif of God-directed pilgrimage through the wilderness. Spanish 'jornadas' and English 'journeys/stages' both capture the sequential, measured quality. 12×
