Portion, share; an allotted part of food or sacrifice, especially a choice piece given as gift or offering.
A feminine noun denoting a portion or allotted share, nearly always of food. In the Priestly texts it names the priest's designated cut from the sacrificial animal -- the breast of the wave offering that belongs to Aaron and his sons (Exod 29:26; Lev 7:33; 8:29). In narrative it conveys affection through food: Elkanah gives Hannah a double manah because he loves her (1 Sam 1:5), and Samuel sets aside a special portion for Saul (1 Sam 9:23). At festival celebrations, Nehemiah urges the people to send manot -- gifts of food -- to those who have nothing prepared (Neh 8:10, 12), a custom that endures in Purim's mishloach manot (Esth 9:19, 22). Spanish 'porcion' and German 'Anteil' both capture this concrete, apportioned quality.
