A masculine noun meaning 'covering' or 'protective layer,' used almost exclusively in Priestly texts for the material draped over the tabernacle structure and its holy objects during transport. The tabernacle itself received an outer covering of rams' skins dyed red and a covering of fine leather above it (Exod 26:14; 36:19; 39:34; 40:19). When the camp moved, each sacred vessel — the ark, the table, the lampstand, the golden altar — was wrapped in its own designated covering (Num 4:8, 10, 11, 12, 25). The one non-tabernacle occurrence is striking: Genesis 8:13 uses the same word for the 'covering' that Noah removed from the ark to see dry ground — perhaps hinting at the ark as a kind of portable sanctuary.
