Conj-w  |  5× in 1 sense
hidden treasure, something concealed of great value
In Hebrew matmon denotes treasure that has been buried or hidden away, whether literally or figuratively. Joseph's steward reassures the brothers that their money was a God-given hidden treasure placed in their sacks (Gen 43:23). Proverbs 2:4 urges the seeker to pursue wisdom as one would search for buried treasure. Isaiah 45:3 promises Cyrus 'treasures of darkness and riches of secret places,' while Jeremiah 41:8 mentions provisions hidden in a field. Job 3:21 uses the image of longing for death more than for treasure.

Senses
1. sense 1 A hidden or buried treasure — something of value deliberately concealed underground or in a secret place. The Spanish consistently renders it tesoro(s) and the French via transliteration or gouvernement, while English glosses range from 'hidden-treasures' to 'hidden-stores.' Used literally of money in sacks (Gen 43:23), cached provisions (Jer 41:8), and Cyrus's promised spoils (Isa 45:3), and figuratively in wisdom literature for what is eagerly sought (Prov 2:4) or desperately desired (Job 3:21).
