Foundation, base — the structural underpinning of a building or, poetically, the deep foundations of the earth itself
The noun מוֹסָד (mosad) refers to a foundation or structural base, used both architecturally and in cosmic-poetic imagery. In David's psalm the foundations of heaven and earth shake when the LORD descends (2 Sam 22:8, 16; Ps 18:7, 15), and Moses' Song warns that God's fire burns to the foundations of the mountains (Deut 32:22). Isaiah asks who laid the earth's foundation from the beginning (Isa 40:21) and calls the rebuilder of Jerusalem 'the repairer of the foundation' (Isa 58:12). Jeremiah 31:37 and Micah 6:2 invoke the earth's foundations as enduring witnesses. Spanish 'fundamento' and French 'fondement' capture both registers.
Senses
1. foundation (structural base) — The cosmic or geological foundations of the earth and mountains, depicted as the deepest structural layer of creation that God alone established and that trembles at his theophanic presence. The foundations of heaven shake (2 Sam 22:8), the foundations of the world are laid bare (2 Sam 22:16; Ps 18:7, 15), fire consumes down to the foundations (Deut 32:22), and the earth's foundations witness against Israel (Mic 6:2). God's faithfulness is measured by their permanence (Jer 31:37; Isa 40:21). Spanish 'fundamentos de la tierra' preserves the cosmic register. 11×
