gleaning, what is gleaned (from harvest)
The portion of a harvest field that may be gleaned by the poor, widows, and foreigners—grain deliberately left behind according to Levitical law. This term appears in the Holiness Code's legislation mandating that landowners not harvest the corners of their fields completely, but leave the gleanings for the vulnerable. This practice, illustrated beautifully in the book of Ruth, institutionalized compassion in Israel's agricultural economy.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Refers to gleanings from harvest—grain or produce left in the field for the poor to collect. Appears in Leviticus 19:9 and 23:22 in nearly identical legal formulations: 'you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleaning of your harvest.' This is a cognate accusative construction (gleaning with the verb 'to glean'), emphasizing the portion designated for the marginalized. The law transforms agriculture into an instrument of justice. 2×
