1. Libnah — A proper noun designating a Canaanite city in the southwestern Shephelah of Judah. Captured by Joshua during the southern campaign (Josh 10:29, 31, 32, 39), it was assigned to the tribe of Judah (Josh 15:42) and later designated as a Levitical city (Josh 21:13; 1 Chr 6:57). In the divided monarchy, Libnah revolted against Judah during the reign of Jehoram (2 Kgs 8:22), and it was the hometown of Hamutal, wife of King Josiah and mother of Kings Jehoahaz and Zedekiah (2 Kgs 23:31; 24:18 = Jer 52:1). The Assyrian king Sennacherib besieged Libnah during his campaign against Judah (2 Kgs 19:8; Isa 37:8). The site also appears as a wilderness station during the Exodus journey (Num 33:20-21). All occurrences with varying prepositions (bare, with mem 'from,' bet 'in,' lamed 'to') refer to the same place. 18×
