This feminine noun denotes a covering, whether a literal garment worn on the body or a figurative concealment. In the covenant code (Exod 21:10; 22:26), it refers to the basic right of clothing that must not be withheld from the vulnerable. Job uses the word to describe the destitute who lack covering against the cold (Job 24:7; 31:19). More strikingly, in Genesis 20:16, Abimelech's gift of silver is called a 'covering of the eyes' — a diplomatic phrase meaning vindication or compensation so that Sarah's honor is publicly restored. Isaiah 50:3 extends the image cosmically: God clothes the heavens in sackcloth as their covering.
