Green vegetation, herbage, or greenness — used of plants given as food and of grass as a symbol of transience.
A masculine noun (יֶרֶק) denoting the quality of greenness or, more concretely, green plants and herbage as a collective category. It appears at pivotal moments in the biblical narrative. In Genesis 1:30 and 9:3, it belongs to creation theology — every green plant (יֶרֶק עֵשֶׂב) is given first to animals, then after the flood, to humanity as food. In the plague narrative (Exod 10:15), the locusts devour every green thing. Numbers 22:4 compares Moab's dread of Israel to an ox licking up the green of the field. The wisdom tradition uses it for transience: the wicked flourish like green grass but quickly wither (Ps 37:2). Isaiah 15:6 deploys it in an oracle against Moab where greenness has perished.
Senses
1. green plants, vegetation, greenness — Green vegetation, herbage, or greenness as a collective or abstract noun. In the creation ordinances, יֶרֶק עֵשֶׂב ('green herb') designates the plant food given to all creatures (Gen 1:30) and later extended to humanity (Gen 9:3). The locust plague consumes every יֶרֶק in Egypt (Exod 10:15). Balak fears Israel will consume Moab's 'green of the field' like an ox (Num 22:4). In wisdom poetry, the wicked fade like יֶרֶק דֶּשֶׁא, 'green grass' (Ps 37:2). Isaiah 15:6 mourns that Moab's greenness has perished. Spanish 'verde' and French 'verdure' both capture the essential color-quality dimension, while English 'green' functions both adjectivally and substantivally as the Hebrew does. 6×
