Foundation, base — the structural bottom of a building, altar, or wall; also used figuratively
Denotes the lowest structural layer on which a building, wall, or altar rests. In ritual law, priests poured sacrificial blood at the base (יְסוֹד) of the altar (Exod 29:12; Lev 4:7, 18, 25, 30, 34) — a detail repeated so often it almost becomes a liturgical refrain. In prophetic judgment, God promises to lay bare the foundations of Samaria (Mic 1:6) and Jerusalem (Lam 4:11), stripping cities down to their very base. The word also extends metaphorically to the 'foundation' of human existence — mortals whose foundation is in the dust (Job 4:19) — and to the righteous as an 'everlasting foundation' that cannot be moved (Prov 10:25).
