remain behind, delay, tarry, linger (often with negative implication of unwelcome delay)
This verb describes staying behind or delaying when forward movement is expected. Genesis 32:5 uses it for Jacob's tarrying with Laban; Genesis 24:56 has Abraham's servant refusing to delay his return journey. The Piel intensifies the sense: 'Why is his chariot so long in coming?' (Judges 5:28). Isaiah 46:13 and Daniel 9:19 assure that God's salvation will not tarry, contrasting divine reliability with human procrastination. The word often carries urgency: someone is late, something is overdue, the expected has not yet arrived—and patience is wearing thin.
