to dread, fear; be afraid of a perceived threat or divine wrath
A verb expressing deep-seated dread or fearful anxiety, often directed at a specific source of danger. In Deuteronomy, Moses confesses he feared (yagorthi) the LORD's burning anger after the golden calf incident (Deut 9:19), and the term recurs for dreading the diseases of Egypt (Deut 28:60). Job uses it poignantly: 'the thing I greatly feared has come upon me' (Job 3:25). The Spanish 'recelé/temo' and German 'Schrecken' both capture the visceral, anticipatory quality of this fear.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be afraid, to dread — expressing fearful apprehension before a specific threat. Used with מִפְּנֵי ('before the face of') for the object feared, whether divine wrath (Deut 9:19) or calamitous disease (Deut 28:60). In Job 3:25 and 9:28, the fear is existential dread of suffering. The Psalmist fears reproach (Ps 119:39). Multilingual glosses — Spanish 'temo/recelé,' English 'dread/feared' — converge on anticipatory anxiety rather than sudden fright. 5×
