An Aramaic noun with a remarkably wide semantic range, moving from the physical sense of taste to abstract judgment, official report, and royal decree. In Daniel 5:2, it means literal taste -- while savoring wine. In Daniel 2:14 it denotes discretion and tact. As an administrative term, it refers to an official report sent to the king (Ezra 5:5) and to decrees issued by royal or divine authority (Dan 3:10; Ezra 6:14; 7:23). Occurs in Daniel 5:2 where Belshazzar, 'in the taste of the wine' (i.e., while enjoying it), orders the temple vessels brought forth.
