Terror or dread inspired by mighty nations and warriors; used exclusively in Ezekiel's oracles against the nations.
A feminine noun confined entirely to Ezekiel, appearing in the oracle against Tyre (Ezek 26:17) and the great lament over fallen warriors in Sheol (Ezek 32:23-32). The recurring phrase 'they spread their terror in the land of the living' echoes like a funeral refrain through chapter 32, applied to Assyria, Elam, Meshech-Tubal, Edom, and the Sidonians in turn. The word captures the dread that once radiated from these empires — a terror now silenced in the grave. German 'Entsetzen' and French 'terreur' both render the visceral shock the word conveys. Its restriction to Ezekiel gives it the flavor of specialized prophetic vocabulary.

Senses
1. terror, dread Terror or dread that mighty kingdoms and warriors once inspired among the living, now extinguished in death. Used exclusively in Ezekiel's oracles: Tyre once caused terror on the seas (Ezek 26:17), and the phrase 'they spread their terror in the land of the living' repeats as a solemn refrain through the Sheol descent poem of Ezekiel 32:23-32, applied to Assyria, Elam, Meshech-Tubal, Edom, and Sidon. The objective genitive construction (their terror = terror they caused) is characteristic. German 'Entsetzen' and French 'terreur' capture the visceral dread this word denotes.
