Hormah (place name)
1. Hormah (place name) The proper noun חָרְמָה designates Hormah, a Canaanite city in the Negev assigned to Judah and Simeon (Josh 15:30, 19:4; 1 Sam 30:30), originally named Zephath and renamed Hormah ('devoted to destruction') after the Israelite conquest (Judg 1:17, Num 21:3). All three clusters are the same toponym with grammatical variation: S99246 is the bare or articled form (חָרְמָה / הַחָרְמָה, 5x), S99248 adds conjunctions/prepositions (וְחָרְמָה 'and Hormah,' וּבְחָרְמָה 'and in Hormah,' 3x), and S99249 is the prepositional form (בְּחָרְמָה 'in Hormah,' 1x). Multilingual transliterations are consistent: Arabic حُرْمَةَ/حَرْمَة, Spanish Horma/Hormá/Jormah, Hindi होर्मा/होर्माह, Korean 호르마, Swahili Horma. The etymological connection to חֵרֶם (ban/devotion) is preserved in several traditions.
