Nobles, leading men — the patrician ruling class, especially of postexilic Judah alongside the officials
A late term for the hereditary aristocracy, appearing almost exclusively in Nehemiah where it designates the 'nobles' who, together with the seganim ('officials'), constituted the governing elite of postexilic Jerusalem. Nehemiah both relies on and rebukes them — they help rebuild the walls (Neh 4:14, 19) yet also intermarry with Tobiah's family (6:17) and exploit the poor (5:7). Earlier uses place nobles in Naboth's city (1 Kgs 21:8, 11), in Jeremiah's Judean court (Jer 27:20; 39:6), and in Edom's doomed leadership (Isa 34:12). German 'Edler' and Spanish 'nobles' capture the social rank precisely.

Senses
1. nobles, leading men Members of the hereditary ruling class, nobles or patricians who hold social rank and political authority. Concentrated in Nehemiah (2:16; 4:8, 14, 19; 5:7; 6:17; 7:5; 13:17), where they appear paired with seganim ('officials') as co-leaders of the postexilic community. Also attested in the monarchic period for the elites of Naboth's city (1 Kgs 21:8, 11), the Judean nobility exiled by Nebuchadnezzar (Jer 27:20; 39:6), Edom's rulers (Isa 34:12), and in wisdom reflection (Eccl 10:17). 13×
