Delight, pleasure, desire, will; also a matter or affair; by extension, a precious or desirable object
A richly layered noun spanning the inner life and the outer world. At its heart it denotes the delight or pleasure one takes in something—whether God's delight in obedience (1 Sam 15:22) or a person's quiet joy in Torah (Ps 1:2). It extends naturally into desire and purposeful will, as when God's pleasure or purpose is accomplished (Isa 53:10). In Ecclesiastes it takes on a more pragmatic flavor, meaning simply a matter or affair—every matter under heaven has its season (Eccl 3:1). Finally, in Proverbs it can refer concretely to precious things: wisdom surpasses all your desirable treasures (Prov 3:15). The Spanish 'agrado' and French 'plaisir' both track the core warmth of the term, while German 'Gefallen' captures both the pleasure and the volitional overtones.
Senses
1. delight, pleasure — The emotional core of the word: a feeling of delight, pleasure, or satisfaction in something or someone. God takes no delight in the blood of bulls (Isa 1:11), and the righteous person's delight is in the law of the LORD (Ps 1:2). The Spanish 'agrado' and French 'délice' mirror this warmth. It can also appear in negative constructions—a vessel in which there is no pleasure (Jer 22:28)—underscoring that its default sense is positive enjoyment. 18×

2. desire, wish, will — An extension from felt pleasure to active desire, wish, or purposeful will. When Scripture says God's pleasure shall prosper in the Messiah's hand (Isa 53:10), it means God's determined purpose. Solomon's exchange with Hiram about timber reflects a concrete desire or wish (1 Kgs 5:8-10). The French 'désir' and Spanish 'deseo' capture this volitional force, distinguishing it from mere passive enjoyment. 14×

3. matter, affair — In Qoheleth's distinctive vocabulary, the word takes a cooler, more abstract turn: a matter, affair, or concern. Every matter has its appointed time (Eccl 3:1), and for every matter there is a judgment (Eccl 3:17). This pragmatic usage appears almost exclusively in Ecclesiastes, where the Preacher catalogs life's affairs with philosophical detachment. The Spanish 'asunto' (affair) precisely captures this non-emotional usage. 4×

4. precious or desirable thing — A concrete, material extension: a precious or desirable thing, a treasure. Wisdom cannot be compared with all your desirable things (Prov 3:15; 8:11), and Isaiah envisions Jerusalem rebuilt with stones of delight (Isa 54:12). Here the abstract quality of desirability has crystallized into a noun for the coveted object itself—jewels, treasures, and costly goods. 3×
