A change of garments (given as gift or prize); a shift, relief, or turn of duty
Derived from the root ḥālap ('to change, pass on, renew'), ḥălīpāh most often refers to a 'change of clothing' — a set of garments given as a gift or wagered as a prize. Joseph sends his brothers home with changes of garments, giving Benjamin five sets (Gen 45:22). Samson's riddle-wager at his wedding involves thirty changes of clothing (Judg 14:12–13, 19). Beyond textiles, the word also denotes a shift or relief in the broader sense: Solomon's labor gangs rotated in shifts (1 Kgs 5:14), Job longs for his 'relief' from hard service (Job 14:14), and the wicked are described as those 'with whom there are no changes' — no upheaval of fortune (Ps 55:19).
Senses
1. change of garments — A change or set of garments, typically presented as a gift of honor or wagered as a prize. The plural ḥălīpōt śemālōt / begādīm ('changes of garments') appears in gift-giving and wager contexts. Joseph's generosity to Benjamin (Gen 45:22) and Samson's riddle-stakes (Judg 14:12–13, 19) illustrate this usage, as does Naaman's offer to Gehazi (2 Kgs 5:5, 22–23). Spanish 'mudas de ropa' and the multilingual pattern of 'changes-of' translations confirm the garment-set meaning. 8×

2. relief, change, shift — A change, shift, relief, or turn of duty in a more abstract sense. Solomon organized Lebanon timber workers in monthly shifts or relays (1 Kgs 5:14). Job uses the word metaphorically for the relief or release he awaits after death's hard service (Job 14:14). In Job 10:17 God sends fresh troops — 'changes and warfare' — against him. Psalm 55:19 describes the complacent wicked as those 'with whom there are no changes,' meaning no reversals of fortune. Spanish 'turnos/relevo' and French 'changement' capture this general sense of alternation or relief. 4×
