1. power, strength Physical or political power, strength, and force. This is the Aramaic cognate of Hebrew חַיִל. Used of brute force and compulsion to halt the rebuilding of Jerusalem ('by force and power,' Ezra 4:23), and of raw might or strength of a ruler or kingdom (Dan 3:4, 3:20, 4:14, 5:7). Often paired with other terms for authority to denote coercive or royal power.

Used of Nebuchadnezzar's army ('in his army,' Dan 3:20) and of an armed host deployed for combat or conquest ('with the host of,' Dan 4:35).
