Shore or coast — the strip of land bordering the sea, used in geographical descriptions of the Promised Land.
A noun meaning shore or coast, always appearing in construct form to describe land bordering the Mediterranean or other bodies of water. Jacob's blessing places Zebulun at the 'shore of the sea' and the 'shore of ships' (Gen 49:13), and the description of the Promised Land's boundaries includes 'the coast of the Great Sea' (Deut 1:7; Josh 9:1). The Deborah song notes that Dan lingered by his ships at the shore (Judg 5:17). In prophetic contexts, Jeremiah and Ezekiel invoke the coast as the scene of divine judgment against the Philistines (Jer 47:7; Ezek 25:16).
Senses
1. shore, coast — The shore or coast of a sea — a strip of land at the water's edge. All seven occurrences use the construct form (chof + noun), binding this word tightly to its geographic referent. Jacob's blessing of Zebulun (Gen 49:13) uses it twice — 'shore of seas' and 'shore of ships' — painting a picture of a maritime tribal territory. Spanish costa and French côte both convey the coastal meaning, while German Gestade and Ufer distinguish between beach-shore and riverbank-type edges. The word marks geographical boundaries (Deut 1:7; Josh 9:1) and prophetic judgment zones (Jer 47:7; Ezek 25:16), always oriented toward the Mediterranean world. 7×
