Sand; granular material of the seashore, used overwhelmingly as a figure for innumerable quantity or immense weight.
Almost always appearing in the phrase 'sand of the sea,' this noun serves as the Hebrew Bible's premier image of uncountable abundance. God promises Abraham descendants as numerous as the sand on the seashore (Gen 22:17), and Jacob echoes this at the Jabbok (Gen 32:12). Joseph stores grain 'like the sand of the sea' until counting becomes meaningless (Gen 41:49). In wisdom literature, sand figures overwhelming weight — Job's grief outweighs the sand of the seas (Job 6:3). Only rarely does it denote literal sand as a substance, as when Moses looks both ways before burying the Egyptian in the sand (Exod 2:12) or when Jeremiah declares God set sand as the sea's eternal boundary (Jer 5:22).

Senses
1. sand Sand used overwhelmingly in similes for innumerable quantity ('like the sand of the sea') — the Abrahamic promise (Gen 22:17; 32:12), military hordes (Judg 7:12; 1 Sam 13:5), and abundance (Gen 41:49). Literal usage is rare: Exodus 2:12, Jeremiah 5:22. Spanish 'arena,' French 'sable' confirm a single concrete noun. 23×
