Thread, cord, or line — a thin fiber used for binding, marking, or measuring.
A versatile noun for a thin, elongated fiber ranging from a single thread to a measuring cord. Abraham swears he will not take so much as a thread or sandal-strap from the king of Sodom (Gen 14:23), while Rahab hangs a cord of scarlet thread from her window as a sign of salvation (Josh 2:18). The Song of Songs compares lips to a scarlet thread (4:3), and Ecclesiastes observes that a threefold cord is not quickly broken (4:12). Whether literal or figurative, the word evokes something slender yet purposeful.
Senses
1. thread, cord, line — A thread, cord, or measuring line — a thin, flexible strand used for binding, marking, or measurement. At its thinnest it means a mere thread, the most trivial possession (Gen 14:23, 'from a thread to a sandal-thong'). As a cord it gains practical significance: Rahab's scarlet cord (Josh 2:18) becomes a sign of deliverance, and the threefold cord of Ecclesiastes 4:12 illustrates the strength of companionship. Spanish hilo and French fil both reflect the 'thread' sense, while the measuring-line use in 1 Kings 7:15 (a line of twelve cubits around a pillar) shows its extension to a builder's measuring cord. Samson's bonds snapping like a thread (Judg 16:12) exploits the word's connotation of fragility. 7×
