1. Hebron (city) — A proper noun designating Hebron (also spelled Chevron), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the ancient Near East, located in the hill country of Judah about 19 miles south of Jerusalem. Named from the root ch-b-r meaning 'association, league.' The city is prominent throughout Scripture: as the site of Abraham's encampment at the oaks of Mamre (Gen 13:18; 23:2, 19; 35:27; 37:14), a major Canaanite city conquered by Joshua (Josh 10:3ff; 14:13-15; 15:13, 54; 20:7; 21:11, 13), assigned as a Levitical city of refuge (Josh 21:11), David's royal capital during his seven-year reign over Judah (2 Sam 2:1-11; 3:2-32; 5:1-5, 13; 15:7-9), and a significant city in the tribal allotments (Num 13:22; 1 Chr 11:1-3; 16:18). 61×
