Fierce rage, stormy fury, or violent indignation — of kings, of God, or of the raging sea.
A poetic and late noun conveying fierce, stormy rage. It describes the violent anger of King Asa, who imprisoned the seer Hanani 'in a rage' (2 Chr 16:10), and the fury of God's judgment (Isa 30:30, Mic 7:9). Proverbs compares a king's wrath to a lion's roar (Prov 19:12). Strikingly, Jonah 1:15 applies it to the raging of the sea, connecting human fury with nature's untamed violence.
Senses
1. rage, fury, indignation — Rage, fury, or stormy indignation — whether of a human ruler, of God, or of natural forces. Spanish 'ira' and 'furor,' alongside French 'colere,' confirm the core meaning of fierce anger. Applied to King Asa's violent outrage (2 Chr 16:10), divine wrath (Isa 30:30 'raging of anger'), a king's roaring fury (Prov 19:12), and the storm-tossed sea subsiding once Jonah is cast overboard (Jonah 1:15). The word bridges personal wrath and cosmic tempest. 6×
