A grand edifice: either a temple (sacred sanctuary) or a palace (royal residence), from Akkadian ekallu.
An Aramaic noun borrowed from Akkadian ekallu ('great house'), carrying a productive ambiguity between sacred and royal architecture. In the book of Daniel, the same word shifts between Nebuchadnezzar's royal palace (Dan 4:4, 29; 5:5) and the Jerusalem temple whose vessels he plundered (Dan 5:2-3). Ezra similarly uses it for the temple being rebuilt (Ezra 5:14-15; 6:5) and for the royal court whose salt the officials eat (Ezra 4:14). The polysemy reflects the ancient Near Eastern reality that temples and palaces were architecturally and functionally intertwined as seats of divine and human authority.
Senses
1. temple, sanctuary — Denotes the sacred temple building, whether the Jerusalem sanctuary or a foreign shrine. Ezra's memoirs use the emphatic form to refer to the temple vessels carried to Babylon (Ezra 5:14) and their intended restoration (Ezra 5:15; 6:5). Spanish 'el templo' and French 'le temple' consistently mark this sacred reading. Daniel 5:2-3 describes Belshazzar summoning the gold vessels 'from the temple' in Jerusalem, where the sacred context is unmistakable despite the banquet's profane setting. 8×

2. palace, royal residence — Refers to the king's palace or royal residence as a grand secular structure. Daniel uses it for Nebuchadnezzar walking on the roof 'of the royal palace' in Babylon (Dan 4:29) and for his personal quarters (Dan 4:4, 'in my palace'). Spanish distinguishes 'del palacio' and 'el palacio' here, while French occasionally retains 'le temple' even for palace contexts, reflecting the word's inherent dual register. Ezra 4:14 ('the salt of the palace we eat') uses it metaphorically for royal patronage, where German and French leave the Aramaic form untranslated. 5×
