Ornament, splendor, majesty; the radiant beauty, imposing grandeur, or bestowed honor of God or persons
A rich poetic noun spanning the visual and the reverential. At its root it evokes something visually striking -- ornamental beauty, as when gray hair is called the 'splendor' of old men (Prov 20:29) or when Israel is commanded to take 'fruit of beautiful trees' for the Feast of Tabernacles (Lev 23:40). When applied to God, it ascends to overwhelming majesty: 'You are clothed with splendor and majesty' (Ps 104:1). It can also denote bestowed honor or glory, as when the psalmist marvels that God crowned humanity with 'glory and honor' (Ps 8:5). French 'majeste' and German 'Pracht' each capture one facet of this multivalent term, but no single translation holds the full spectrum.
Senses
1. splendor, beauty — Visual magnificence and radiant beauty -- the outward splendor of God's creation, a person's appearance, or a city's adornment. The psalmist declares God is 'clothed with splendor and majesty' (Ps 104:1), and Leviticus prescribes 'fruit of splendid trees' for Sukkot (Lev 23:40). Spanish 'esplendor' and French 'majeste' both point toward this dazzling visual quality. The LXX renders with horaios (beautiful), reinforcing the aesthetic dimension. 18×

2. majesty, dignity — Awe-inspiring grandeur and imposing royal or divine presence that commands reverence. Moses blesses Joseph with the 'majesty of a firstborn bull' (Deut 33:17), and the psalmist praises God's voice as 'full of majesty' (Ps 29:4). In 1 Chr 16:27, majesty and strength dwell in God's sanctuary. German 'Majestat' captures this sense of power-laden dignity that goes beyond mere visual beauty. 8×

3. honor, glory — Attributed honor, renown, or recognized distinction belonging to a person or bestowed by God. When God asks Job 'Deck yourself with glory and splendor' (Job 40:10), the word denotes an honor one wears like a garment. The psalmist marvels that God crowns humanity with 'glory and honor' (Ps 8:5), and Micah laments that 'my glory' has been stripped from the women and children of Israel (Mic 2:9). Here the sense moves from visual splendor to social or moral worth. 4×
