to draw up (water); figuratively, to extract or lift out
A verb meaning to draw water from a well, used concretely of the daughters of the priest of Midian drawing water for their flocks at Exodus 2:16 and 2:19. Figuratively, Proverbs 20:5 speaks of a person of understanding drawing out the deep counsel hidden in another's heart. Psalm 30:1 extends the image to God drawing the psalmist up from the depths, giving the water-drawing metaphor a soteriological dimension.

Senses
1. sense 1 To draw water from a well or cistern, and by extension to extract or lift something from a deep place. The literal sense appears in Exodus 2:16, 19, where Reuel's daughters draw water (Spanish 'sacar,' French 'tirer'). Proverbs 20:5 applies the image figuratively: a discerning person draws out ('lo sacará') the deep counsel of the heart. Psalm 30:1 uses it of divine deliverance — God drawing the psalmist up as one draws water from a pit — blending the concrete and metaphorical dimensions of the root.
