A tribal banner or military standard marking Israelite camp divisions and marching order in the wilderness.
Refers to the large standards carried by each of the four three-tribe divisions during Israel's wilderness encampment and march. Nearly all 14 occurrences appear in Numbers 1–2 and 10, where each דֶּגֶל heads a camp of three tribes — Judah to the east, Reuben to the south, Ephraim to the west, Dan to the north. The single figurative use in Song of Solomon 2:4, 'his banner over me is love,' transforms the military emblem into an intimate image of covenantal protection. Spanish consistently uses 'bandera,' while English alternates between 'banner' and 'standard.'
