Be anxious, worry, fear; to experience inner distress, concern, or dread about a situation or person.
Describes a state of anxious concern, worry, or fear. In its earliest uses (1 Sam 9:5; 10:2), Saul's father worries about his missing son, a natural parental anxiety. The word also conveys spiritual and existential dread: the psalmist is anxious because of sin (Ps 38:18), and Jeremiah 17:8 promises the person who trusts in the LORD will not be anxious even in drought. Isaiah 57:11 uses it in parallel with 'fear,' shading into the sense of dreading another person. Cognate with Talmudic de'ig, the root consistently captures the gnawing inner turmoil of apprehension.
