this, that (Aramaic feminine demonstrative pronoun); in reciprocal construction, 'the other'
The Aramaic feminine demonstrative pronoun, the counterpart of masculine denah. It appears exclusively in Daniel's Aramaic sections, pointing to contextually prominent referents -- 'this great Babylon' (Dan 4:30), 'this horn' (Dan 7:8), and the differing beasts of chapter 7. In one distinctive usage with the preposition le, it forms a reciprocal construction: da leda, meaning 'one against another' (Dan 5:6), describing Belshazzar's knees knocking together in terror. German 'dies' and Spanish 'esta/este' capture the basic demonstrative force throughout.
1. this, that (basic demonstrative) The basic demonstrative function -- 'this' or 'that' -- pointing to a specific, contextually salient referent. Five occurrences span Daniel's visions and narratives: 'Is not this great Babylon?' (Dan 4:30), the beasts differing from one another (Dan 7:3), and 'this horn' (Dan 7:8). Translations across languages converge on simple demonstratives: English 'this/that,' Spanish 'esta/este,' German 'dies.'

2. the other (contrastive demonstrative) A contrastive or reciprocal use with the preposition lamed, forming the idiom da leda ('one to another' or 'one against the other'). In Daniel 5:6, Belshazzar's knees strike 'one against the other' as he sees the writing on the wall. English 'against that' and Spanish 'contra la otra' both highlight the adversative, reciprocal relationship between paired items rather than simple deixis.
