Golan -- a Levitical city of refuge in Bashan, in the territory of eastern Manasseh
Golan is the proper name of a city in Bashan designated as one of the six cities of refuge (three on each side of the Jordan). Located in the territory of eastern Manasseh, it was assigned to the Levitical clan of Gershon (1 Chr 6:71). Moses himself set it apart as a refuge city for the accidental manslayer (Deut 4:43), and it reappears in Joshua's formal lists of both refuge cities (Josh 20:8) and Levitical cities (Josh 21:27). The Ketiv/Qere variation galon/golan reflects a scribal spelling issue rather than any semantic difference. The modern Golan Heights region derives its name from this ancient city. All target languages preserve the toponym unchanged: Spanish Golan, French Golan, German Golan.
