Gog — proper name: (1) a Reubenite in 1 Chronicles; (2) the eschatological enemy from Magog in Ezekiel 38-39
Gog (גּוֹג) is a proper name with two referents. In 1 Chronicles 5:4, Gog appears as a descendant of Reuben in a genealogical list. Far more significantly, Ezekiel 38-39 portrays Gog of the land of Magog as a mighty eschatological adversary whom God summons from the remote north to attack a restored Israel, only to be catastrophically defeated by divine intervention — fire, hailstones, pestilence, and an earthquake. This Gog becomes the archetype of the final enemy of God's people, echoed in Revelation 20:8. The name's etymology is debated; some connect it to Gyges of Lydia (Akkadian Gugu). Spanish and English both transliterate as 'Gog.'

Senses
1. Gog A proper name identifying: (a) a descendant of Reuben in the Chronicler's genealogy (1 Chr 5:4), and (b) the eschatological ruler 'of the land of Magog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal' (Ezek 38:2-3), who leads a vast coalition from the far north against restored Israel, only to be destroyed by God's direct intervention (Ezek 38:18-23; 39:1-15). The Ezekielian figure becomes paradigmatic for the final enemy of God's people, reappearing in Revelation 20:8. Some identify the name with Gyges of Lydia (7th c. BCE). Spanish 'Gog' and French 'Gog' preserve the form unchanged. 10×
