Greatness, magnificence; of God's majesty or mighty acts, and of human honor or rank.
A noun denoting greatness, whether the intrinsic majesty of God or the honor and dignity of a human ruler. David praises God's greatness alongside sovereignty, power, glory, and splendor (1 Chr 29:11), and the psalmist declares that God's greatness is unsearchable (Ps 145:3, 6). The same word describes Mordecai's advancement in the Persian court (Esth 6:3; 10:2) and the splendor of King Ahasuerus (Esth 1:4). In 2 Samuel 7:21, 23 and 1 Chronicles 17:19, 21 it refers concretely to the great things God has done for Israel. The plural intensifies to mean 'great deeds' or 'mighty acts.'
Senses
1. greatness, great deeds — Greatness, magnificence, or majesty, used both abstractly of God's incomparable nature (1 Chr 29:11; Ps 145:3, 6) and concretely of the mighty acts he performs on behalf of his people (2 Sam 7:21, 23; 1 Chr 17:19, 21). Also applied to human honor and rank—the greatness of Mordecai (Esth 6:3; 10:2) and the splendor displayed by King Ahasuerus (Esth 1:4). The intensive plural form underscores extraordinary, epoch-making deeds rather than mere status. 13×
