Gibeon — a major Canaanite city that became a Levitical city in Benjamin, site of the tabernacle and famous treaty
Giv'on is a place name identifying the prominent city northwest of Jerusalem, modern el-Jib, whose inhabitants famously tricked Joshua into a peace treaty by disguising themselves as distant travelers (Josh 9:3-27). The city's Hivite population thus became woodcutters and water carriers for Israel rather than being destroyed. Gibeon later hosted the tabernacle and great high place where Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings and received his gift of wisdom (1 Kgs 3:4-5; 2 Chr 1:3). The pool of Gibeon was the site of the grim contest between Joab's and Abner's men (2 Sam 2:12-16), and the 'great waters which are in Gibeon' witnessed Ishmael's capture of captives (Jer 41:12). Isaiah recalls Yahweh's decisive action 'in the valley at Gibeon' (28:21).
