Gebal - Phoenician coastal city, ancient Byblos, famous for shipbuilding and skilled craftsmen
This place name refers to the Phoenician maritime city known to Greeks as Byblos, modern Jebeil in Lebanon. Famous for shipbuilding, skilled craftsmen, and as a major center of papyrus trade (hence 'Byblos' and our word 'Bible'), Gebal appears in Ezekiel's lament over Tyre. The city's artisans were renowned for caulking ships and working with wood and stone. Assyrian records confirm the city as Gubli. Its strategic coastal position made it a significant commercial and cultural hub.

Senses
1. sense 1 Ezekiel 27:9 states, 'Veteran craftsmen of Gebal were on board as shipwrights to caulk your seams.' This appears in the extended metaphor of Tyre as a magnificent ship. Gebal's master craftsmen contributed their expertise to Tyre's maritime glory. All translations preserve the name (Gebal, Guebal), recognizing it as the well-known Phoenician city, maintaining the historical-geographical reference essential to understanding Tyre's international commercial network.
