V-Hifil-Imp-ms  |  5× in 1 sense
To set bounds, establish a border, or mark a boundary; used of territorial limits and sacred perimeters.
A denominative verb from gebul ('border'), meaning to set bounds or establish a boundary line. Its most dramatic use is at Sinai, where God commands Moses to set bounds around the mountain so no one may touch it (Exod 19:12, 23). Elsewhere it describes territorial boundaries: the Jordan bordering Benjamin's inheritance (Josh 18:20), ancestral landmarks not to be moved (Deut 19:14), and Hamath's border reaching toward Sidon (Zech 9:2). Spanish captures this range well—from 'pondrás límite' (you shall set a limit) at Sinai to 'delimitaba' (it bounded) for geographic borders.

Senses
1. sense 1 To set bounds, mark a boundary, or establish a territorial border—used both of sacred perimeters and geographic limits. The Hiphil imperative at Sinai (Exod 19:12, 23) describes marking off holy ground to prevent unauthorized approach, while the Qal in Josh 18:20 and Deut 19:14 describes geographic bordering and the prohibition against moving ancestral boundary markers. Zech 9:2 extends the usage to geopolitical borders ('Hamath that borders on it'). Spanish 'pondrás límite' (you shall set a limit) and 'delimitaba' (it delimited) together reflect the range from sacred prohibition to geographic demarcation.
