Berotah, a place name near Hamath, possibly meaning 'wells' or related to Berytus
This place name appears in Ezekiel 47:16, in the description of Israel's northern boundary near Hamath. BDB suggests it may be a contraction of 'Be'erotah' (from 'well/spring'). Some scholars proposed identifying it with Berytus (modern Beirut), but this is geographically unlikely. More probably it refers to Bereitan near Baalbek. The site marked the northern extent of restored Israel in Ezekiel's visionary borders. The etymology remains uncertain, though the 'be'er' (well) connection is plausible.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A place name appearing in Ezekiel 47:16 as a boundary marker near Hamath in the prophet's vision of restored Israel's northern borders. The name possibly derives from 'be'er' (well), suggesting 'place of wells.' Identification with Beirut (Berytus) is unlikely; Bereitan near Baalbek is more plausible. Multilingual renderings (Berotá, Berotah, Bérothah) simply transliterate, reflecting the proper-noun status and ongoing uncertainty about the exact location and etymology of this border town. 1×
