Open field, wild country (Aramaic) — the uncultivated land where wild animals roam.
An Aramaic noun for open country or wild field, equivalent to Hebrew sadeh. It appears exclusively in Daniel's Aramaic chapters, nearly always in the phrase khevat bar ('beasts of the field'), describing the wild animals that inhabit uncultivated terrain. In Nebuchadnezzar's dream-tree vision (Dan 4), it is the open field where the king himself will dwell among beasts as divine judgment. Spanish campo, French champ, and German Feld all converge on 'field,' confirming the consistent outdoor, uncultivated sense throughout.
Senses
1. sense 1 — An Aramaic noun for the open, uncultivated field or wild country — the domain of wild animals. Equivalent to Hebrew sadeh, it appears in the construct phrase khevat bar ('beasts of the field') in Dan 2:38; 4:12, 15, 21, 23, 25, 32. The emphasis is on untamed terrain outside human habitation, especially prominent in Nebuchadnezzar's humiliation narrative (Dan 4) where the king is driven into the bar to live among animals. Spanish campo, French champ, and German Feld uniformly render it as 'field.' 8×
